How to Avoid Burnout in Hectic Seasons: Staying in BrillianceMode®

When I promised my newsletter subscribers a deep dive into how to avoid burnout, the response was positive. It turns out, finding effective strategies to prevent burnout and manage daily stress is a massive priority for so many of us right now. Because this topic resonated so strongly, I’m moving my top insights out of the inbox and onto the blog. Whether you are currently experiencing the early signs of burnout or just want to proactively protect your peace, here is your guide to reclaiming your energy.

The last six months of my life have been an absolute whirlwind. From interviewing Dr. Condoleezza Rice at the Super Bowl Breakfast and returning to LA for the NBA All-Star Weekend, to speaking at Leadercast 26 alongside incredible leaders like Patrick Lencioni and Andy Stanley, it has been a season of fulfilled dreams. Most recently, I debuted the BrillianceMode Experience® at a restorative retreat in Montana.

But let me be completely candid: dreams can be exhausting. It is so easy for high-achieving women to fall into the comparison trap and run on empty. I’ve received questions lately asking, “Kim, with a schedule like that, how did you avoid burnout?”

To stay in what I call BrillianceMode®, leading and serving from a place of authenticity and peace rather than striving, I had to be deeply intentional. Here are the four specific strategies I used to protect my peace and prevent burnout during this high-demand season:

1. Radical Pacing

When you look at a six-month calendar filled with travel and massive events, it is easy to panic. I combatted this by focusing entirely on one task and one event at a time. I refused to let my mind live in next week’s presentation while I was sitting in today’s preparation. Presence over panic is key.

2. Trusted Accountability

We are not meant to carry the weight of leadership alone. I leaned heavily on my advisory board, giving them permission to check in on me regularly. They held me accountable to my boundaries and ensured I was genuinely taking care of myself, preventing that feeling of being overwhelmed.

3. The Pause for Praise

High achievers are notoriously bad at celebrating; we often cross a finish line and immediately look for the next starting block. This year, I made a conscious choice to celebrate each success before moving to the next thing. Acknowledging the win gives your brain the dopamine and rest it needs to keep going.

4. The Silent Escape

Whenever I felt the rising tide of overwhelm, especially in rooms with hundreds of people, I gave myself permission to slip away. In a quiet place, I would take deep breaths, center myself, and recite statements of gratitude out loud. This practice completely shifted my perspective and calmed my nervous system.

Avoiding burnout isn’t about halting your ambition; it’s about managing your energy. You can do high-impact work without sacrificing your well-being on the altar of success.

Mode Up

1. When you look at your calendar for the coming weeks, which task or event are you most tempted to stress about in advance, and how can you practice “presence over panic” instead?

2. Who makes up your “advisory board” or support network, and how can you proactively give them permission to check in on your boundaries today?

3.What is one recent “win” you haven’t taken the time to celebrate yet, and how can you intentionally pause to acknowledge it today?

4.What does your personal version of “The Silent Escape” look like, a simple ritual or place that helps you calm your nervous system when you feel overwhelmed?
