Quiet the Noise

The world is noisy. The innovation of technology has made us more productive, accessible, and tethered to a plethora of auditory stimulation. Whether it’s a television in the background, music on your playlist, or the random dings of notifications indicating that something needs our attention, life can get pretty loud.

It’s fairly easy to see how the “noise” can disturb our peace, but what many of us may not realize is that it can also distract us from our purpose.

The Many Distractions of Life

How? Well, first of all, we must consider that the “noise” I am referring to goes beyond audible distractions. It comes in different forms, including:

  • The ever-growing to-do list
  • Opinions of others
  • Expectations of others
  • Drama
  • That thing you regret volunteering for
  • Thoughts that keep you up at night
  • The lies you’ve believed since childhood
  • Unforgiveness
  • Comparison

This list could go on and on.

When we live a distracted, noisy life, we tend to forgo intentionality and give our most valuable attention to the urgent matters at hand. Even the best of planners can have their days sabotaged when their good intentions get trampled by an urgency needing their attention.

Without intentionality, it’s easy to find ourselves veering off course when it comes to the plans we’ve made for our day.

But what happens when you wake up to find yourself veering off course when it comes to the plans you’ve made for your life? Or what happens when you awaken to the fact that you’ve never had a course, plan, or purpose for your life in the first place? You’ve just been letting life happen to you, hoping for the best.

Each of us may experience pockets of purpose on a daily basis, but what if you could live each day, all day in the center of your purpose? This is possible!

Living a Life on Purpose and In Your Purpose

When it comes to living a life on purpose and in your purpose there are a number of places you may find yourself.

  1. You believe you have a purpose, but your job or responsibilities take priority, which makes it challenging to live out that purpose daily.
  1. You believe you have a purpose, but you’re not sure what that purpose is.
  1. You haven’t really considered that you could have a purpose, but you’re open for discussion.
  1. You believe that having a purpose is nonsense.

Wherever you are, I invite you to consider what your life could look like if you walked confidently in your purpose. Yes, a noisy life can distract us from living a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

For some, your purpose screams over the noise and you have clarity and passion. But many times, the noise drowns out our purpose, and over the years, it begins to fade into the background like elevator music in a posh old-fashioned hotel.

However, even in the throes of our hurried world, it is possible to quiet the noise so we can hear the gentle whisper of our purpose.

The Gentle Whisper of Our Purpose

How do we hear the gentle whisper of purpose? It’s nothing profound. It starts with getting quiet.

Click on this link to receive a download of an exercise I call the FocusMode Experiment. It is a good first step in getting quiet and initiating intentionality when it comes to living a life of purpose.

Use your discretion as you schedule your length of time and days for this FocusMode Experiment. It is not meant to overwhelm you but to bring a sense of calm and peace to your day. Know up front that each day won’t necessarily go perfectly. Life happens. But you can always keep moving forward by doing the next morning or evening session.

Remember, this is for you. It’s supposed to be life-giving, not draining.

Getting Quiet Unlocks Possibilities

By getting quiet regularly, you will create a calm space for your mind to rest and remember the qualities about yourself that may have been set aside, put on hold or covered up due to noise of life’s circumstances.

By being intentional with this FocusMode Exercise, you will open the door of possibilities when it comes to reuniting with or discovering your purpose.

Again, there may be some days, when you may have to adjust the time you spend in FocusMode, but if you can stick with it, you will begin to gain clarity.

As you gain clarity, your purpose is unfolding. As things become more clear, consider how you can begin to implement the purpose you’re discovering in your everyday life.

Your purpose is not defined by your career nor can it only be activated within the workplace, but it is something you were designed to do that can be demonstrated wherever you find yourself. In your job, your home, and in your community.
